Posted: 2020-04-26

Windows 10 photo is the most problematic application in Windows 10 default apps. I have seen errors on this app more often than any other application. If you are unable to open Gif, JPEG or JPG files on your Windows 10 computer. Below is list of troubleshooting steps you might try to resolve the problem.

Update the Windows to the latest version
1: Press the Windows key and click the Settings icon or type Update in the Windows search box.
2: Click Update & Security Windows Update and check for updates.
3: Install if new update is found and reboot after the Windows update is complete

Using a Power Shell to repair the Windows default apps
1. Open Power Shell as an administrator using Windows Search or Cortana.
2. To open Power-Shell as admin, right click on Windows Power-Shell and select Run as administrator.
3. Then type following command and press Enter:

Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.Windows.Photos | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

4. Let the command run its course and close it once it’s complete.

Reset the Windows App
e. Open Apps & features by searching it in the Windows search or using Cortana
f. Scroll down to Photos, select and right click it
g. Click Advanced options
h. Click Repair, it should be put a check mark beside Repair after it completes. This normally takes few seconds.
i. Reboot your computer and try the photo program again.
Note; you can also try reset instead of the repair or try both.

Remove and Reinstall the Photos App
e. Run this Powershell command to remove the photo app

get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage

The above command should remove the Photo App from your computer. To reinstall it, go to the Microsoft Store, search for “Photos,” then select and install the Photos.

Using Window’s Apps Troubleshooter
There is Microsoft App to troubleshoot App related problems. You can get this App from the Windwos App Store or from online. It’s called App Troubleshooter.
To run it:
1. Open Settings App in Windows 10 or type Update in the Windows search box.
2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
3. Scroll down to click Windows Store Apps and choose Run the troubleshooter.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions, reboot your computer, and see whether the problem still exists.

Use My Photo App
My Photo App is very similar to the Microsoft Windows Photo App and is problem free. It’s available on the Windows App Store to download and install.
