how to design your own dotted sharpie mug

Posted: 2015-02-16

My girlfriend has recently done this DIY project to make her friend a birthday gift and it turned out to be really cool. What it consists of is taking a mug and designing something by putting multiple colors of marker dots onto the mug and then baking the mug to make the design permanent. Required materials: A plain white mug (suggested to be plain white) Oil-based Sharpie paint pens Suggested letter or design stencil Rubbing alcohol The first step is to clean the mug surface with some rubbing alcohol to ensure the paint marker will correctly be applied to the surface. After cleaning, apply a letter shaped sticker/stencil so that you can form Sharpie dots around the design. After the stencil/design is applied, take your Sharpie and dot all around the shape in high densities, switching colors every so often if desired (multi-colored Sharpie mugs look really cool in my opinion)! After you are pleased with the outlined shape you have made in Sharpie dots, remove the stencil and place the mug on a cookie sheet in the oven. Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit with the mug in the oven and bake the mug for 30 minutes at 350. Once the 30 minutes is up, turn off the oven and keep the mug inside until the oven has completely cooled. This part is absolutely critical, as heating/cooling the mug too quickly may result in cracks. There you have it! You should now have your very own, permanent design mug! Happy crafting!
