Lake Ontario is a source of water for over 9- million people situated in Ontario City in Canada and New York City in United States of America. It is one of the five great lakes located in North America. The name of the Lake “Ontario” originates from the Iroquoian language. The word Ontario means “the lake of shining waters.” The Lake Ontario was formed as a result of glacier activity about some 10,000-14,000 years ago. Lake Ontario is the world’s 14th largest lake. It is the most endangered among all great lakes of the world. The water of almost all other big lakes had to pass through Lake Ontario before it falls in the Atlantic Ocean. The mighty Niagara Falls also pours in Lake Ontario. Lake Ontario provides habitat for a wide range of living organisms. As a result of human activities (over fishing) in Lake Ontario almost 10 species of fish have gone extinct and more than 15 species have been discovered. Still lots of threats are imposed to the lake. Some of the major threats imposed to Lake Ontario are due to the following factors: • Urbanization • Global warming • Power generation • Pollution • Sand erosion However, now Lake Ontario Water-keeper is working on the project of conservation of Lake Ontario. The Lake Ontario offers some of the paramount beaches in the world. There are over 100 beaches in Lake Ontario. These beaches are visited by a large number of people annually. Also, there are thousands (almost 2,000) of islands on Lake Ontario. Amazing Facts: The Lake Ontario is so deep that it never freezes completely. Its average depth is 283 ft. / 86 m. It ranks 4th in the deepest Lakes of the world. Only the apparent of Lake Ontario has frozen more than five times last time this happened was way back in 1934.
