United Kingdom- The Place of Knowledge, Learning and Heterogeneity

The sixth largest economy in the world, the United Kingdom is one of the original seats of Western Civilization as it encompasses thought, culture and the advancement of the human condition with the parallel progress of knowledge and its benefits in material terms. But to its credit, the UK has concentrated its efforts on “Soft Power” coming into terms that civilizations rise and mould with the passage of time as the will force that governs the cosmos unravels its whims and plans.

The temperate climate of Britain needs no introduction and the British gentleman with his umbrella exemplifies the wet climate that has become the archetype of the sophisticated man of civilization. Stonehenge is an architectural site that abounds with various theories that claim the final word on the mystery behind its creation. The Hadrian’s Wall, the Castle at Warwick and the likes are important destinations for the visitors of this nation. The Lake District, a favorite with the English Romantic poets, particularly Wordsworth, allures people with its serene and scenic temper. One can also come across several ghosts in supposedly haunted Tower of London which is also now the home to the British Crown Jewels which include the legendary Kohinoor. The clock tower of Big Ben is a leading attraction for tourists visiting London.

In the world of letters particularly when they form words of the English language, the contribution, richness and vast diversity of the United Kingdom or more popularly England needs no emphasis. Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Pinter, Joyce, Milton, Elliot all are names that have become synonymous with rich literature of the highest order. Sherlock Holmes, the then quintessential face of Britain was the alter ego or the brainchild of Arthur Conan Doyle who is of Scottish lineage. Same is the case of Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns. Empiricism, Cricket and James Bond elucidate the cultural diversity of the people of the United Kingdom.
