The Ubud Monkey Forest also known as “Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary” is located in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is its official name and on welcome sign, its name is written as “Padangtegal Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana”. It is the most famous tourist attraction in Bali and almost over 10,000 visitors visited here monthly.
It lies within the village of Padangtegal and covers a tenth of a square kilometer. It has at least 115 different varieties of trees. It contains a gallery, a canteen, a public hall, a police post, a first aid centre, parking and toilet facilities. Its main aim is management of the area within its circumference according to the Hindu formula of Tri Hata Karana (three ways of attain religious and physical benefit) which enhance people to spend their lives sympathetically. These three ways are friendly relationships between humans and humans, between humans and the natural environment, and between humans and the Supreme God. Forest has a goal of providing peace and comfort for visitors from all over the world.
The Monkey Forest has three Hindu Temples:
• The Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal is the Main Temple. It means Great Temple of Death. It lies in the Southwestern side of park. This Temple is used for worshiping the God Hyang Widhi in personification of Shiva.
• The Pura Beji lies in Northwestern side of the park. This Temple is used for worshiping the God Hyang Widhi in personification of Gangga. It is a place of physical purification prior to religious ceremonies.
• The Pura Prajapati Temple lies in the Northeastern part of the park. It is used for worshiping the God Hyang Widhi in personification of Prajapati. A tomb next to this Temple takes the dead bodies for temporary burial while they attend a mass cremation ceremony which held once in five years.
There are many monkeys in Ubud Monkey Forest known as Balinese long-tailed monkey. They eat sweet potato, banana, papaya leaf, corn, cucumber, coconut and other local fruit three times a day.
