Knowing a foreign language is nowadays a must. But with English being almost a mandatory international language, we must focus on other, less common, languages. French, Spanish, German and even Russian have become pretty popular. But what happens if assimilating a new vocabulary is not quite easy as pie?
Here are some tips that will help you learn a foreign language.
First of all, in order to learn something, you have to like it. That is why it’s easier to learn English from songs or movies and Spanish from soap operas. When we bring together a task and an activity we enjoy doing, it becomes easier to complete the task, in this case learning a new language.
Daily exercise is the key to success. Whether you are listening to a radio station, watching a movie or reading a book, the important thing is to have daily contact (or as often as possible) with that language. If are traveling abroad, mingling in with the local community is the best way to catch new words, phrases and expressions.
You can find many learning tools online. There are several programs which can guide you, step by step.
Speak out. You shouldn’t feel bad about your pronunciation or accent. You will get better, but in order to do that, you must practice. So take whatever opportunity you get to exercise the language you are learning. You can start by talking to yourself.
Don’t start with grammar, as this is usually the trickiest part. You should start by learning words and short and practical phrases. As you get better with these, grammar won’t feel so hard.
Don’t crave for perfection. Acknowledge that you are a beginner and don’t ask too much from yourself. You can take baby steps, as long as you are moving forward.Publisher: cristina
