how to find a device port when you know the device ip address cisco switch

To find out what port a device is connected on Cisco switch when you know the device IP address requires couple of commands on your CLI interface.

First find the device MAC address by typing this command:

Cisco-SW#show ip arp 192.168.1.1
Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface
Internet 192.168.1.1 224 0035.c102.bb8x ARPA Vlan1

Change the IP address 192.168.1.1 to the device IP address. Note the MAC address, 0035.c102.bb8x in this case.

Type this command to find out the port after you get the MAC address:

Cisco-sw#show mac address-table address 0035.c102.bb8x
Mac Address Table
——————————————-
Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
—- ———– ——– —–
2 0035.c102.bb8x DYNAMIC Gi1/0/21
Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 1

Note, the device is connected port 21 (Gi1/0/21) in this example. This also gives you the device VLAN.
