Hawaii-based Martin & MacArthur is almost as old as statehood, and the furniture it makes out of Big Island koa looks like it will last forever.
Martin & MacArthur [is] famous for its furniture, jewelry boxes and calabashes that showed off the beauty of koa. Older Hawaii residents with lots of disposable income would pay thousands of dollars for a one-of-a-kind rocking chair, desk or four-poster bed.
Today, the company still makes fine furniture, but the money is in small items that visitors can take home with them — bracelets, watches and cell phone cases. It now markets to the 20-something international visitor instead of the 60-something kamaaina, using a combination of smaller bricks-and-mortar locations and social media.
